I just finished Othello, and feel the need to rant about if somewhere.
Twas AMAZING. Though admittedly everyone died, again- except Michael Cassio, who ROCKS. I wanted to personally murder Iago throughout the play. There were moments were I was pleading people would say the right thing and send allIago's plans up in flames- like that whole scene when Iago plays that interview with Cassio while Othello is hiding- I was pleading Cassio to just drop in Bianca's name
somewhere and then she walked in and I was
sure this was the opportunity to thwart Iago, but no...he smoothed it all over and made everything even worse TT_TT Then if that idiot Roderigo has said just a
few lines more before he died.... also people kept conveniently forgetting things.... like Cassio forget everything that happened when he was drunk- and both Othello and Desdemona forgot she dropped that cursed handkerchief...
Anyway! I thought it was ingeniously put together- at the start I was completely thrown by what Iago's motives were, but as the play wore on, you can just see why he does it- he loves it; the whole playing one side off to the other, the destruction of everybody's' lives, the way everyone continues to love him whilst he secretly brings about their demise... He's a stunning character; I hate him, but I can't help admiring the way he manages to alienate himself so ruthlessly from the rest of the human race that he can continue to play the puppet master through to its bitter and deceptive ends.
In Shakespeare, I tend to like the second-to-main characters who get slightly less limelight- I liked Cassio for his free and brash manner that reminded me so much of my Kin'oatori- he got a bit too sentimental later on, but.. meh, he's still cool. Actually in Twelth Night, my favourite character was Feste, the fool- he had by far the best lines in the play. However, I liked Tybalt and Benvolio best in Romeo and Juliet..... but Hamlet still tops all by a long way XDD
Anyway, the waffling was mainly for my own need to rage about Iago and Cassio; I've have my fill for the moment, so I shall cease and save the sanity of anyone who actually read all this XDD
(I am
totally revising for my exams and in
no way reading the entire works of Shakespeare right now
